Find sales tax errors in Shopify refunds before you file
TaxDelta is a Shopify app that reads your orders and flags where the sales tax looks wrong: tax over-refunded on partial refunds, refunds entered without line items, tax collected in states you aren't registered in, and exempt orders that were still charged tax. Each finding shows the order and the amount, so you can check it before you file. TaxDelta only reads your orders. It doesn't change anything or file returns.

What TaxDelta checks
- Over-refunded tax. Partial refunds where more tax went back than the refunded items and shipping carried.
- Refunds without line items. Refunds entered as a custom amount, whose tax impact can't be worked out from the order, listed so you can check them by hand.
- Unregistered states. Tax collected in a state you aren't registered in, once you tell TaxDelta where you're registered.
- Exempt and non-USD orders. Exempt orders that were still charged tax, and exempt and non-USD orders worth confirming in your tax filing software.
- Undercollected tax. Tax collected below the state base rate, once you tell TaxDelta where you're registered.
- CSV export. Export findings as a CSV for your accountant.
How it works
Install
TaxDelta asks for read access to your orders. It has no permission to change orders, refunds or tax settings.
Scan your orders
Optionally tell TaxDelta which states you're registered in, then run a scan. It reads your orders through a Shopify bulk export.
Review and decide
Each finding shows the order, the amount and how serious it is. You decide what to fix in Shopify or in your tax filing software, and what to take to your accountant.

Shopify merchants who collect US sales tax and issue partial refunds, especially stores that file by hand, use tax filing software, or are getting ready to file themselves now that Shopify's automated filing is ending.
Common questions
Does TaxDelta file my sales tax?
No. It doesn't file returns or prepare one for you. It reads your orders and shows what to check before you or your accountant file.
Does it change my orders or issue refunds?
No. TaxDelta only reads your orders. It doesn't change orders, issue refunds or touch your tax settings, so you decide what to fix.
Why does it flag refunds entered as a custom amount?
A refund that isn't tied to line items or shipping doesn't say which items it was for, so its tax impact can't be worked out from the order. TaxDelta lists them so you can check each one by hand. They aren't always errors.
Does it replace my tax filing software or accountant?
No. It's a check on the Shopify side, before you file. It can't see what your tax filing software reports, and whether to amend a filed period is your accountant's call.
Which taxes does TaxDelta check?
US sales tax, by state. Orders in other currencies are listed for you to review.
